KOTA KINABALU:
A Sabah opposition leader has pinned the blame for a massive landslide which occurred last night on a nearby land clearing, urging the authorities to quickly locate those responsible.

Sabah Progressive Party deputy president Japiril Suhaimin said the landslide which occurred at 9.40pm had cut off a main road in Kundasang, about 90km from here.

He said it also caused a four-hour blackout in the area which is located at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu as electricity poles had been uprooted.

“This landslide occurred because of land clearing by certain quarters at the hill above the affected road,” he claimed when contacted.

“We hope the Department of Environment and the state Public Works Department (PWD) will immediately find those responsible for this incident, which has affected thousands.”

While an alternative route is available for public use, he said, it is not in satisfactory condition.

The landslide near Kampung Pinausok occurred following continuous rain which caused the ground to give way. No one was hurt in the incident.

Ranau PWD engineer Mac Glen Lojuman said the main road remains off limits to the public as his team is still carrying out repairs.

“We are also making improvements to the alternative route, to be the main traffic-way now at Jalan Mohimboyon-Kibbas,” he said.

Mud continues flowing down the hill following last night’s landslide.

Japiril said smaller landslips had also occurred in the same area, and he called on the authorities to look into the issue.

He also called for the construction of an alternative route in the event of further landslides.
