PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia has been reelected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) council for the 2020-2021 term, securing the third highest number of votes among 24 countries.

The election was carried out at the 31st regular session of the IMO assembly held at the organisation’s headquarters in London yesterday.

The IMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping.

A statement by the foreign affairs ministry in Putrajaya said Malaysia would be serving as a Category C council member for the eighth consecutive term.

“The achievement is a strong reflection of continued confidence by the maritime communities of Malaysia’s role as a council member,” it said.
