KUALA LUMPUR:
Police have identified the local company responsible for putting up the digital imagery, displaying a five-pointed star on the Malaysian flag, during the opening ceremony of the basketball tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamed said they will be calling up several individuals from the company to question them on the incident.

Their statements will be obtained tonight or tomorrow, he added.

“Many netizens have commented negatively about this issue.

“We hope to solve this case soon and refer it to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action,” he said at a press conference at Bukit Aman here today.

Yesterday, the Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba) apologised for displaying the wrong image of the Malaysian flag.

The Jalur Gemilang has a 14-pointed star and 14 red and white stripes that represent the nation’s 13 states and the Federal Territories.

Maba has accepted full responsibility for it.

Huzir said police had already received nine police reports on the issue which went viral on social media and are also studying four recordings of the incident from Maba to assist in the probe.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and his deputy, Steven Sim Chee Keong, have urged for strict action to be taken against those who intentionally tarnished the image of the Malaysian flag during the competition.

On another matter, Huzir said 19 more witnesses will be called up to assist in new investigations by a special task force into the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

He said some of those who had already given their statements previously could be called up again.

So far, five people who were witnesses in the case have had their statements recorded, including Seri Kembangan state assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah and lawyer M Manoharan.

The task force was set up on the orders of the attorney-general on July 16 that Teoh’s death be investigated under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful detention.

Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, after giving a statement at the MACC office on the 14th floor of the same building.
