Negeri Sembilan won’t change marriage age, says MB

Existing state law and current state government policy already strict enough, he says.

Menteri besar Aminuddin Harun says there is no reason to change the law.
SEREMBAN:
The Negeri Sembilan state government stands by its decision not to amend the enactment regarding the minimum age limit for marriage, menteri besar Aminuddin Harun said today.

He said the existing state law was strict enough. “Actually, the state government policy on the matter is a bit strict, we do allow underage marriage but it must get approval from the (shariah) court first.

“There is no reason for the state government to amend or enact a new law,” he told reporters after the state assembly sitting here today.

Aminuddin who also heads the state Islamic Religious Action Committee, said the state government would not allow underage marriage to simply take place without control.

Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said recently that the draft of the National Strategic Plan to tackle the problem of underage marriages was at the final stage.

Yesterday, minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Mujahid Yusof, said that a new procedure being drafted would require all states to abide by the minimum marriage age of 18.
