Guan Eng denies Penang being treated as a step-child

The finance minister says federal allocations to Penang had been increased in the 2019 and 2020 federal budgets.

Lim Guan Eng, who is finance minister, says allocations for Penang were increased in the 2019 and 2020 budgets.
GEORGE TOWN:
Lim Guan Eng, the DAP secretary-general and finance minister, has rejected allegations that Penang continued to be treated like a ‘step child’ by the Pakatan Harapan federal government in regard to development allocations in the annual budgets.

Lim said in a statement today that the development allocations had increased in the 2019 and 2020 federal budgets.

He said the Penang development allocation was only RM547 million and RM608 million in 2017 and 2018, under the Barisan Nasional and had been increased to RM857 million and RM980 million for 2019 and 2020, by the Pakatan Harapan government.

He said the PH government faced a big challenge to ensure the distribution of allocations to all the states based on the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

“The federal government tries to correct the discrimination which took place prior to this to the ‘opposition states’ such as Penang, subject to the financial and fiscal position of the country,’’ said Lim.

Prior to this, opposition leaders claimed that Penang continued to be treated as a ‘step child’ by the federal government, even though PH had taken power in Putrajaya.
