KUALA LUMPUR:
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has assured Malaysians that they will continue to monitor militant Yazid Sufaat, released yesterday after being accused of involvement in the Sept 11, 2001 attacks in the US.

Hamid said Yazid will continue with his rehabilitation and “we will not allow him to escape the process”.

Police will make sure Yazid follows the conditions attached to his release, he told reporters at a Deepavali open house, organised by the finance ministry and National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia.

“He has been freed on several conditions. He will have to fulfil them.

“I am very sure and confident we will take good take care of it (the situation). Don’t worry,” he added.

Hamid said the conditions laid down are strict and this would help to rehabilitate Yazid.

“We will not give up on the rehab process,” he said, adding that the eyes of the police force are on Yazid.

The function was also attended by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran.

Yazid was freed after serving two years behind bars under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota).

He is required to wear an electronic monitoring device and is required to seek permission before he can travel outside Ampang.

It has been reported that Yazid had acquired four tonnes of ammonium nitrate to prepare for a series of bombings in Singapore in 2000 but the plot by the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network was foiled.
