PONTIAN:
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan yesterday urged the police to review the regulation requiring election candidates to obtain a permit from the authorities for door-to-door campaigning.

Speaking to reporters after a ceramah at Kampung Parit Rambai here last night, he said he learnt about the regulation from members of the Barisan Nasional (BN) machinery.

“I WhatsApped Art Harun immediately and he told me the order came from the police,” he said referring to Election Commission chairman Azhar Harun.

“Since when have we had such rules for elections? I never heard of such a thing in my life. This, of course, will create trouble for us,” he added.

Mohamad also noted that candidates only have a few days left to campaign.

“In the past 10 days, no untoward incident has taken place. If the order came from Bukit Aman, I hope they can re-look it,” he said, adding that the members of his campaign team respect the law.

BN candidate Wee Jeck Seng said he would rework his campaign strategy for the next three days.

“I can still go to coffee shops to meet voters and speak at ceramahs,” he said, adding however that he would no longer visit voters at their homes.

The requirement for a police permit was earlier panned by Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Mahdzir Khalid as well.

However, Pakatan Harapan candidate Karmaine Sardini said he had no problem with the regulation.

On a separate issue, Mohamad also said Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s presence in Tanjung Piai would affect BN’s campaign.

“This is a competition and the best man wins,” he added. “We will try our best to persuade the voters.”

He also criticised DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s suggestion that state DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong assist Karmaine if PH retains the Tanjung Piai seat in the by-election this Saturday.

He asked why Liew would be needed to manage Chinese affairs for PPBM in the constituency.

“It seems that they are insulting their own candidate by implying that he cannot manage his voters, especially the Chinese,” he said during the ceramah.

On claims by PKR’s Rafizi Ramli that he had brought in RM10 million to buy overseas assets 10 years ago, Mohamad said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had already investigated the issue.

“MACC grilled me for over eight hours,” he said. “I told them that was my money which I had declared.”

He added that the same issue had been raised during the campaign for the Rantau by-election in April as well.
