JOHOR BAHRU:
The prosecution today filed a notice of appeal against the acquittal of a sales promoter on a charge of reckless driving that caused the deaths of eight teenage cyclists two years ago.

Johor prosecution director Amir Nasruddin said the notice was filed because they believed there were merits to the appeal, based on several factors.

On Oct 28, magistrate Siti Hajar Ali acquitted and discharged Sam Ke Ting, 24, who was charged with reckless driving that caused an accident in which eight teenage cyclists were killed on Feb 18, 2017.

Met at the courthouse today, Amir said the issues the prosecution will raise include the identity of the accused, the location of the incident, and whether the accused was unfamiliar with the road.

He refuted claims that the notice was filed because of pressure from the victims’ families or any other party, and described it as a normal procedure following a court decision.
