Quit, opposition tells AG after LTTE charges against DAP rep dropped

The opposition wants Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to also explain justification for dropping charges.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The opposition today called for Attorney-General Tommy Thomas’ resignation after two charges against a DAP assemblyman for alleged possession of items related to the defunct Tamil separatist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were dropped.

Opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob suggested that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to either ask for the AG to resign or to fire him.

He questioned the AG’s justification for dropping the charges against Negeri Sembilan assemblyman P Gunasekaran: “We ask the AG to explain his justification.”

The Sessions Court yesterday allowed the prosecution’s application to withdraw two counts of possessing items related to the LTTE against Gunasekaran.

Gunasekaran was initially alleged to have LTTE-related items in his possession at his office and residence.

The offences were allegedly committed at No 2844, Jalan SJ 3/6B, Taman Seremban Jaya, and No 139, Kampung Baru Rahang here at 10am and 11.50am respectively on Oct 10.

Ismail said dropping the charges was “a great slap to the police force which had carried out its duties professionally”.

Ismail claimed this was not the first time the AG had done such a thing, citing Lim Guan Eng’s case involving the alleged purchase of a bungalow below market value in Penang.

The Penang High Court acquitted Lim after the prosecution applied to drop the corruption charges.
