MACC keeps eye on Tanjung Piai by-election, sets up operations room

The anti-graft agency says all election candidates and their parties must observe the election laws.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which is monitoring the Nov 16 Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election, has opened an operations room to enable the public to share information or make complaints on any corrupt activity or abuse of power.

The 24-hour operations room is located at the Johor MACC complex on Jalan Persiaran Tanjung in Tampoi, Johor Bahru, the commission said in a statement today.

It said the public may communicate with MACC through 07-213 600, 07-213 6170 or 019-654 4680 or email [email protected].

MACC advised all candidates and their parties to observe the election laws and regulations in line with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Election Offences Act 1954.

It said it will also work with the Election Commission and the police to monitor the election campaign.

The by-election will see a six-cornered fight involving candidates from Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), Gerakan and Berjasa as well as two independents.

The candidates, announced at the close of nominations this morning, are Karmanie Sardini (PH), Wee Jeck Seng (BN), Wendy Subramaniam (Gerakan), Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz (Berjasa) and independents Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar and Ang Chuan Lock.

The seat fell vacant following the death of PH’s Md Farid Md Rafik, 42, who was also a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, on Sept 21,
