KUALA LUMPUR:
Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the government’s ban on the controversial comic book “Belt & Road Initiative for Win-Winism” is due to its content, not sentiment or instructions from others.

He told reporters at the Parliament lobby here that the investigation into the book had resulted in “solid proof”, adding that it would be banned if found in circulation.

“This is a serious issue and I have to take action as soon as possible,” he said.

“I ask everyone not to read it, and to avoid perusing the book at all as we have already banned it.”

The home ministry banned the comic book yesterday on grounds that it promotes communism and socialism and contains factual errors.

It said the book could be “detrimental to public order and safety” as it had elements that could encourage support and sympathy for communism.

Some 2,500 copies of the book were recently distributed to school libraries as reference material.

Muhyiddin said these would be left to the education ministry for further action.
