Pro-China comic: Cops rope in historians, seize copies

Bukit Aman's probe to cover home ministry, National Library.

The publishers of the comic book promoting China’s Belt and Road Initiative got into trouble with authorities.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Police said they have confiscated all copies of a comic book which sparked controversy over its pro-China propaganda.

Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Huzir Mohamed said that police were also working with historians to check the accuracy of historical facts in the book titled “Belt and Road Initiative for Win Winism”.

The book, authored by former DAP man Hew Kuan Yew and published by his outfit the Asia Comic Cultural Museum, drew condemnation from various quarters over its politically-charged content.

Huzir said all three versions of the work – in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and English – have been seized.

He said police have also interviewed several people, including two staff of a printing press in Shah Alam.

Huzir said the investigation will also find out if the book was given the home ministry’s publication permit.

“We have also put in an application to the National Library in relation to the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) issued for the title,” he added.

Earlier today, police questioned Hew over his involvement in the book’s publication.

The publisher had announced that copies of the comic book would be distributed to secondary schools, sparking outrage from the public. A total of 46 police reports have been lodged against Hew.
