They said the suspect lived directly across from a fire hose reel cabinet on the 15th floor of the Sinar Bukit Dumbar apartment building, where the grenades and 689 bullets of various calibre and three loaded gun magazines were found.

Northeast police district chief Che Zaimani Che Awang said the suspect revealed where he kept his stash during interrogation on a drug-related case.

Che Zamani said the two grenades, which police initially described as “bombs” last night, were later detonated.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for unlawful possession of firearms and Section 8(a) Arms Act 1960 for carrying arms or ammunition without a permit.

The offence under the Firearms Act carries a 14-year jail term and/or whipping, while the Arms Act offence carries a seven-year jail term and/or a RM10,000 fine upon conviction.
