200,000 consumers to face water cuts in Penang on Monday

The water authority says repair work must be carried out after a pipe burst on Jalan Bukit Gambir.

Consumers in the southern part of Penang island will be without water for 12 to 24 hours on Monday
GEORGE TOWN:
About 200,000 consumers are expected to experience water supply disruption for 12 to 24 hours from 10am on Monday after a pipe burst on Jalan Bukit Gambir near here.

Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) CEO Jaseni Maidinsa said the 900mm mild steel pipe, located underground, had burst on Tuesday, causing water supply disruption for two days.

“This burst segment must be repaired to normalise water pressure, reduce water loss and restabilise the treated water delivery system,” he said in a statement.

The pipeline supplies water to consumers in the southern part of Penang island.

Fifteen affected areas from Jalan Bukit Gambir to Bayan Lepas, including Universiti Sains Malaysia, the Penang International Airport, Relau and Bayan Lepas, will experience a 12-hour disruption in water supply from 10am on Monday.

Consumers in Persiaran Kelicap, Gertak Sanggul, Teluk Kumbar and Bukit Penara in Balik Pulau have been advised to store sufficient water for 24 hours.
