KUALA LUMPUR:
The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) project, which was suspended in May, will continue, says Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“The RTS will continue but it will take some time,” he said after the launch of the National Transport Policy 2019-2030.

He added the government will announce more details in time to come.

In May, Malaysia and Singapore agreed to suspend work on the RTS until Sept 30.

Malaysia was to pay RM2 million in compensation to Singapore for the six-month suspension.

Putrajaya then applied for an extension until Oct 31 for a decision.

The 4km RTS Link connects Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore.

It is expected to ferry up to 10,000 passengers per hour each way. The joint venture was supposed to be completed by 2024.

It was reported earlier that if Malaysia decides to terminate the RTS Link project, the cost incurred by Putrajaya would be around S$66 million.

The RM4 billion project was mooted to ease traffic congestion.
