KUALA LUMPUR:
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is owed RM58 million in rental for People’s Housing Projects (PPR) and other public housing, according to Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad.

He said the arrears date back to tens of years and the main excuse given by the tenants for not settling the arrears is that they are unemployed.

Khalid said DBKL was giving the occupants three to six months to settle these arrears.

“We’ll see how it goes then,” he told reporters after launching the Wilayah Care Initiative programme at the Desa Rejang public housing project here today.

Present were city mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim and National Anti-Drug Agency director-general Zulkifli Abdullah.

Khalid said DBKL had also pioneered the Career Carnival at PA Desa Rejang, with cooperation from Jobs Malaysia, to help the tenants find suitable jobs to settle their rent arrears.
