After formal ceasefire with Umno, Hadi meets Sarawak CM

Both leaders exchanged views on strengthening cooperation between Sarawak and the two states ruled by PAS.

Abdul Hadi Awang and top PAS leaders today paid a courtesy call to Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg, just three days after the Islamist party signed a historic charter with Umno marking a new challenge to the Pakatan Harapan government.

“We exchanged views on the efforts to strengthen the ties between Kelantan, Terengganu and Sarawak, and to strengthen cooperation in guarding the nation’s peace and unity,” the PAS president said after meeting Abang Johari at his office in Kuching.

Accompanying him were Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and Sarawak PAS commissioner Jofri Jaraiee.

On Aug 14, PAS and Umno leaders signed the so-called “Piagam Muafakat Nasional”, or National Unity Charter, pledging to uphold the interest of the Malays, Islam as the official religion, and Malay as the national language.

In the general election last year, Pakatan Harapan won in all but five states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perlis and Sarawak.

While PAS and Umno have since formalised their cooperation, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headed by Abang Johari led other Barisan Nasional component parties in the state to quit the coalition and form Gabungan Parti Sarawak.
