Maybank in bid to claim money frozen by govt in forfeiture application

The bank is seeking to claim the money from a company and several individuals whom it says have outstanding loans.

KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank today sought to claim the money in bank accounts frozen and seized by the authorities from several individuals and a company after the May 9 polls last year.

Lawyer Muhamad Al Muazzim Azmi Amin told the High Court here that Maybank wants to claim the money from Rembulan Kembara Sdn Bhd, former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng, Ng’s wife Lim Hwee Bin, and Kee Kok Thiam, an associate of Low Taek Jho.

He said the individuals and company in question have outstanding loans with the bank.

High Court judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan advised the bank to file an application to be a party in the government’s suit and set Nov 15 for next mention.

The government is seeking to forfeit RM32,037.34 from Rembulan Kembara, RM237,264.38 from Ng, RM429,324.14 from Lim and RM1.29 million from Kee. The money was kept in their Maybank accounts.

The court also set Oct 11 as the deadline for former prime minister Najib Razak and the other individuals named in the forfeiture application to file a reply to the prosecution.

The government is seeking the forfeiture of hundreds of items seized from the former prime minister and 17 individuals and companies after Pakatan Harapan swept to power.

Other individuals named in the forfeiture suit include Najib’s wife Rosmah Mansor, film producer Riza Aziz, Najib’s children and Low’s mother, Goh Gaik Ewe.

The items seized include luxury handbags, cash in different currencies, watches, shoes and 27 vehicles.

RM18 million in various bank accounts and a bungalow belonging to Low’s family in Tanjung Bungah have also been seized.
