Lee said the investigating officer recorded his statement for 45 minutes at his service centre here and that he had given full cooperation to the authorities.

“One of the questions asked was about my involvement in the rally, if I knew the rally was being held without a permit, and whether I delivered a speech that day,” he told reporters.

Lee said statements had also been recorded from the chairman of the Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) group, Tan Bun Teet, as the organiser of the assembly, and Kuantan Green Solidarity Association secretary Chu Seng Pong.

On Sunday, Kuantan district police chief Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali said that the rally did not meet the criteria set by the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as the Kuantan Municipal Council had not granted approval for the rally to take place at the site.

The rally was held to oppose an extension of the operating licence for the rare earths processing plant owned by Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Lynas). About 200 people took part in the rally.

On Thursday, the police had recorded statements from Teruntum assemblyman Sim Chon Siang and SMSL’s lawyer Hon Kai Ping.
