Orang Asli Community Management Council (MPKOA) chairman Asrul Husin, 24, said it was the villagers’ second experience with elephants this year.
“In March, hundreds of banana trees grown by the villagers were ruined. The bananas are a source of income for many,” the head of the settlement with over 200 inhabitants said.
Syaimi Ab Hadi, 39, said villagers are afraid of going out at night because that is the time the bull elephant leaves the jungle to forage for food.
“We suffered heavy losses in March, not just with the banana crops but also because we needed to replant the rubber tress which were trampled over,” he said.
“We have informed the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) and we hope something can be done soon because the elephant might decide to attack the villagers next,” he said .
