Maszlee was asked about the possibility of the government introducing other calligraphy styles such as Chinese calligraphy in schools.
The ministry’s decision to introduce khat as part of the Year 4 Bahasa Melayu syllabus from next year has received mix reaction.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad welcomed the decision and said the objections came from only a small part of the community.
Maszlee said he had met with Chinese-language print and electronic media editors to discuss the introduction of khat. He said he told them that certain procedures had been improved so that the move would not burden the students and teachers.
Meanwhile, Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen suggested that khat should be offered as an alternative subject especially in national-type Chinese schools.
Chong, who is also the deputy domestic trade and consumer affairs minister, noted the mixed reaction, especially from the Chinese community in Sarawak.
