KUALA LUMPUR:
The bill to amend the Federal Constitution to lower the voting age has been withdrawn, with a fresh bill to be tabled tomorrow.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the new bill will include the opposition’s proposals for automatic voter registration and the lowering of age for electoral candidates to 18.

“The opposition has given its commitment to support the constitutional amendment with the two proposals included.

“I am confident of a two-third majority. The bill will be re-tabled tomorrow,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was also present at the press conference, thanked Mahathir for agreeing to the two proposals.

“Since the government has agreed to our proposals, the opposition will surely support.

“The seriousness of the government is shown with the withdrawal of the bill,” he said.

The opposition previously said it would back the amendment bill if it comes with automatic registration of voters, as well as lowering election candidates’ minimum age to 18.

A constitutional amendment requires a two-third majority or at least 148 votes. Pakatan Harapan has 139 MPs.
