Govt to update laws on gambling to include online activities

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says many of the laws on gambling were passed decades ago when online gambling did not exist.

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the government is looking to amend laws on gambling to include online gambling, as the existing laws on the matter were passed decades ago.

“(They need) updating because at that time, there was no online gambling,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He added that countries such as Singapore have a special act for action on foreign servers.

He was replying to Jalaluddin Alias (PH-Jelebu), who asked if there were plans to amend the gambling laws drawn up in the 1950s and 60s which could be considered obsolete.

He added that some syndicates earn up to RM300,000 a day, operating without a licence and with only two to three workers.

“The number of syndicates is increasing,” he said.

Alice Lau (PH-Lanang) meanwhile urged the government to take action on police officers whom she said are involved in illegal gambling in Sibu.

She also asked what action could be taken against those involved in illegal online gambling.

Muhyiddin said he would not hesitate to act against any police officer found to be involved in illegal gambling activities.
