Instead, Azmin said there was a commotion at the back by some attending the national-level Felda Settlers’ Day 2019 celebration at Felda Selancar 3 in Rompin.
“I think there was a small disruption at the back but we don’t know about it,” the PKR deputy president said.
A video recording of the incident shared on social media showed Azmin’s speech drowned by “boos” from the audience.
Azmin was making reference to the government’s efforts to restore Felda amid allegations of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.
He had come under pressure in recent weeks in the wake of allegations that he had a homosexual relationship with a former Sarawak PKR youth leader. Azmin has strongly denied the claim.
Azmin also disagreed with a suggestion by a PKR leader that the negative reception was due to the event being held in Pahang, seen as an Umno stronghold.
He said Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and state executive councillors were also present at the event.
“We have a good working relationship,” he said, adding that he and Wan Rosdy had held discussions on approving infrastructure projects worth hundreds of millions of ringgit in Pahang.
They include a RM173 million water supply project in the Gebeng industrial area, a RM446 million water treatment plant in Semambu, and a RM18 million project to prevent water supply disruption in Raub.
“This shows that we have never sidelined Pahang’s development and that we have a good working relationship with the state government,” he said.
Azmin was asked about comments by Permatang Pauh PKR deputy chairman Dr Afif Bahardin, who said the jeers from the crowds were the work of those out to create disturbance.
Azmin said Felda settlers were warm towards Pakatan Harapan leaders, including Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who attended the event.
