No local govt elections just yet, says ministry

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah says this will require a Cabinet decision.

PETALING JAYA: The housing and local government ministry says local elections will not be implemented in the near future as doing so will require a Cabinet decision.

Deputy minister Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah said the Local Government Act 1976 would have to be reactivated while amendments would have to be made to acts under the Election Commission and a new law created for local government elections.

“So far, the ministry has held three series of workshops in 2018 and 2019 to study the feasibility of conducting local government elections,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

“The ministry is also in the process of providing information to the Cabinet.”

He said his ministry would present the results of its review to the Cabinet by year-end after gathering feedback from state governments and NGOs.

He was responding to Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) who had asked about the ministry’s progress on the matter and whether local government elections would be implemented in the near future.
