‘Communist uniform’ libel case goes into negotiations

High Court sets a date by which deputy minister Liew Chin Tong and JMM chief Azwanddin Hamzah will settle out of court.

Liew Chin Tong has sued Azwanddin Hamzah for libel and seeks RM20 million in damages.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong and Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) president Azwanddin Hamzah are exploring the possibility of an out of court settlement of a libel suit over an allegation that Liew had worn a “communist uniform” at a military event.

Liew’s counsel Asheeq Ali told reporters that High Court Judge Azimah Omar has set July 26 by which parties must decide if they could settle the matter out of court.

“If there is no resolution, the High Court will proceed with the trial from Sept 23 to 25, as set earlier,” he said when met outside the court after case management today in the presence of counsel Sarah Abishegam who represented Azwanddin.

Liew filed a defamation suit against Azwanddin on Dec 27, over a Facebook posting in which Azwanddin alleged that Liew had intentionally worn a “Communist uniform” to a military event.

Azwanddin was alleged to have uploaded an image and captioned it with the remark on Oct 30, 2018.

The suit also involved an article written by Azwanddin on JMM’s website on Nov 19, 2018 with the title “Kementerian Pertahanan Kini Berada Dalam Tekanan Dan Ancaman” (The defence ministry is under pressure and threat).

Liew is seeking RM20 million in damages, as well as an injunction restraining Azwanddin from publishing similar articles.
