Amendments to allow automatic voter registration must go through Parliament, says EC

This follows calls by the opposition for automatic voter registration to be implemented alongside the lowering of voting age.

The government is expected to table a bill today to amend the constitution in a bid to lower the voting age.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The Election Commission (EC) says any amendments to make automatic voter registration compulsory must be tabled in Parliament, following calls by the opposition for this to be done in tandem with the lowering of voting age from 21 to 18.

EC chairman Azhar Harun said the government would need to table amendments to Article 119 (4) of the Federal Constitution and the Election Regulations (Voter Regulation) 2002 which can be done without debate.

“All the laws that touch on automatic registration must be amended,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

The government is expected to table a bill today to amend the constitution in a bid to lower the voting age.

The opposition bloc said yesterday that it would give unanimous support to the amendment if Article 119 of the constitution is also amended to allow for the automatic registration of all citizens aged 18 and above.

Opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob also said Article 47 of the constitution must be amended to lower the eligible age to be an MP from 21 to 18 so that such individuals can contest elections.

“If an 18-year-old citizen can be automatically registered as a voter and an 18-year-old can contest the elections, then we will support the amendments. Otherwise, we are not agreeable,” he said.

He added that the opposition MPs would table a private bill to amend the constitution if the two proposals are not included in the proposed amendment brought by the government today.
