MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd received the award for its community efforts initiated in the underground package of the Klang Valley Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line.
It was the only Malaysian company to have been recognised at the event attended by contractors, designers and geotechnical personnel to celebrate the best in ground engineering.
The other finalists included notable projects such as the Thames tideway tunnel, the High Speed 2 enabling works programme in London, and the Shoreham Adur tidal walls flood defence scheme.
In a statement today, MMC-Gamuda said the award submission and review were undertaken by a panel of over 50 expert judges.
It said the entrants were required to not only demonstrate initiatives which provide community benefits throughout construction but also leave a lasting impact and legacy after that.
“MMC-Gamuda does just that with their many education-based initiatives such as the inception of the Tunnel Training Academy and MRT Info Centre, their STEM school outreach programmes, and use of social media for public engagements,” it said.
In awarding MMC-Gamuda the award, the judges said it “demonstrated a complete hearts and minds approach to community engagement, with significant legacy benefits and enhancement of construction standards in health and safety and stakeholder
management”.
They also pointed out that the company’s quality, safety and health initiatives were “raising the safety and construction standards in the country for future generations”.
The Ground Engineering Awards event was the 11th in the series.
