GEORGE TOWN:
A prolonged downpour has left many parts of Penang including Butterworth in the mainland under water, as weathermen warned of strong winds in the northern peninsula.

Early today, strong winds wreacked havoc in Pulau Tikus, Bayan Lepas and George Town, uprooting trees and damaging homes.

According to the meteorological department’s MyCuaca app, heavy rains are expected to continue over the weekend.

Butterworth is the worst affected, and a relief centre has so far accepted over 50 evacuees in Sungai Dua.

Other affected areas in Butterworth are the Mak Mandin Industrial Area and surrounding neighbourhoods, Taman Cantik, Kg Lahar Ikan Mati, Kg Setol, Kg Merbau Kudung, Kg Sg Lokan, and Kg Chegar.

Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh said the flash floods were caused by high tides and heavy rainfall measuring as high as 118m.

In Kg Merbau Kudung and Mak Mandin, floodwaters reached up to 200mm.
