Man faces 7 years’ jail for threatening mufti Asri

The Magistrate’s Court in Kangar today charged a clerk from Penang with criminal intimidation for threatening Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin through a private message on Facebook Messenger.

Kumaresan Yehganathan, 36, from Gelugor pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was charged with intimidating Asri by sending him a message which read: “I janji u I akan punch mulut you sampai masuk wad”, through the Facebook Messenger feature linked to the Facebook account “Sandev Sandev” on May 1 at about 6pm.

Kumaresan is charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation with a threat to cause grievous hurt, which carries a maximum seven-year jail term.

Magistrate Norhayati Ibrahim allowed bail at RM5,000 with one surety, and set May 17 for case management and for a lawyer to represent the accused.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Farhan Aliff Ahmad prosecuted while Hajar Ahmad represented the accused as a stand-in.
