Better known as “Uncle Kentang”, a moniker he earned for giving free potatoes to the poor in Selangor, Kuan is travelling to Rantau tomorrow to help housewife Malar Rajaram and former lecturer Mohd Nor Yassin.
The duo are facing Pakatan Harapan’s Dr Streram Sinnasamy and Barisan Nasional’s Mohamad Hasan.
One of Kuan’s first stops will be at the launch of Malar’s manifesto tomorrow, where he will be a “special guest speaker”.
“His presence will be good for my campaign,” Malar told FMT when contacted.
For Kuan, anyone with good intentions to help the people should be given the chance to do so.
Kuan, who came out last in the Semenyih by-election on March 2 with 725 votes, and lost his deposit, said he admires Malar’s good intentions.
“We should not give up easily. Abraham Lincoln failed many times before he was elected as US president, so we should keep our spirits up,” he said.
“We are real people, not like the politicians.”
But he is under no illusion that Malar or Nor Yassin will win in Rantau.
He said what is important is to give the ruling party a good fight.
“The government is currently facing financial constraints. So it will be good to see how independents plan to make life better for their fellow people without much help from the government. This is a good thing.”
