PETALING JAYA:
Singapore today executed Sarawakian Michael Garing, the second Malaysian to be sent to the gallows in the city-state after Prabu N Pathmanathan last October.

The Malaysian High Commission in Singapore said Michael was hanged at Changi Prison this morning.

A spokesman from the commission told Bernama Michael’s remains are expected to arrive at Sibu Airport tomorrow, before being brought back to his hometown in Kapit.

“We are currently assisting Michael’s family members who are here,” the spokesman added.

It is understood that Michael converted to Islam while in jail and chose Muhammad Arif Sufi as his Muslim name.

Michael had been part of a gang involved in a robbery in Singapore in May 2010, which led to the death of construction worker Shanmuganathan Dillidurai. Three others were severely injured in the incident.

Michael was sentenced to death for Shanmuganathan’s murder in April 2015.

His death follows that of Prabu, who was also hanged at Changi Prison after being found guilty of trafficking drugs across the causeway in 2014.

His execution drew condemnation from rights activists, who also claimed that confessions obtained against Prabu were made under duress.
