KUALA LUMPUR: Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo today defended his call for news portals to moderate comments, saying it is not meant to curtail civil liberties.
Rather, he said, it is to maintain decorum and prevent expressions that promote inflammatory remarks which may affect national security.
“Freedom of expression is not meant to promote lewd, vulgar or sexist comments. Neither should we condone physical threats or threats of bodily harm on social media.
“Such posts or comments should be avoided. This can be achieved through self-regulation and help from the portals themselves,” he said in a statement.
Gobind added that asking portals to moderate the content in their comment sections is not unreasonable.
