Court awards Maria Chin RM25,000 for wrongful detention

The defendants have agreed to pay RM25,000 in damages and RM5,000 in costs.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The High Court here has awarded former Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah RM25,000 for her wrongful detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) in 2016.

In the suit against the inspector-general of police (IGP), the home minister and the government, Maria’s lawyer Gurdial Singh Nijar said the defendants had agreed to pay the RM25,000 in damages as well as RM5,000 in costs.

He said the settlement was reached without admission of liability.

The consented judgment was recorded by judge Nik Hasmat Nik Mohamad in chambers.

Senior federal counsel Kamal Azira Hassan, who acted for the IGP, home minister and government, was also present for case management held in the judge’s chambers.
