Harvard and NUS product… not! Zuraida rubbishes viral claims

The minister denies ever claiming to be a graduate from the Singapore and US universities.

Zuraida Kamaruddin says reports on her academic background are wrong.
PETALING JAYA:
PKR’s Zuraida Kamaruddin is the latest politician to deny claims over her academic credentials, saying she had never attended the National University of Singapore (NUS) as claimed in some reports.

Zuraida, who is also the local government and housing minister, was responding to attacks by some social media users, who said they could not find her name on NUS’ degree verification website.

“I am also not responsible for the wrongful entry in Wikipedia which claims that I am a NUS graduate,” the Ampang MP said in a statement.

An infographic prepared by Bernama in May last year, when she was sworn in as minister, was also shared on social media today.

Among others, it states that Zuraida has a degree in social science from the “University of Singapore”.

Contacted by FMT, Zuraida said Bernama had not verified the information with her, adding that she had requested a news portal using a similar infographic to make the correction at the time.

In a Wikipedia entry on her, it is now stated that Zuraida is a social science graduate from the “Harvard University of higher learning”.

“It’s mad,” she said when asked to comment on the claim, which is believed to be keyed in by an anonymous user earlier today.

Zuraida is the latest politician being accused of having questionable academic qualifications, following accusations hurled at Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya.

Marzuki has since explained that he obtained his degree from a little-known distance-learning institution called Cambridge International University (CIU), and not from its namesake, the world-renowned University of Cambridge.
