Deputy minister: I leave it to cops to verify validity of my degree

This comes after an activist lodged a police report asking for the deputy minister’s academic credentials to be verified.

GEORGE TOWN:
Deputy Foreign Minister Senator Marzuki Yahya today said he would leave it to the police to probe questions about him being a Cambridge University graduate.

He viewed the police report as part of a smear campaign by certain parties who are against him.

“This kind of mudslinging and baseless accusations are expected in politics.

“I leave it to the police to probe the person’s claims.

“Until then, I’d rather not comment further,” Marzuki said on the sidelines of a Chinese New Year open house in Bayan Lepas here today.

Yesterday, political activist Muhsin Abdul Latheef lodged a police report after reading a Facebook post questioning the legitimacy of Marzuki’s Cambridge University degree.

He said the Facebook post showed the Wikipedia page of the PPBM secretary-general claiming to have obtained the degree from Cambridge via “long distance learning”.

Muhsin said the author of the Facebook post, “Zulfahan Pagon”, had checked online and found that Cambridge does not offer degree programmes via “long distance learning”.

He has since asked the police to probe the FB user’s claim.
