PETALING JAYA:
PAS says it will not contest the Semenyih by-election, the second time the Islamist party will be skipping the polls this year.

In a short statement today, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party would give way to Barisan Nasional (BN) as the coalition had obtained the most votes after Pakatan Harapan in the May 9 general election.

He added that PAS would campaign for the opposition in the Semenyih by-election.

In the general election last year, PPBM’s Bakhtiar Mohd Nor defeated BN’s Johan Abd Aziz by 23,428 votes to 14,464.

The by-election is expected to be called following Bakhtiar’s death from a heart attack on Jan 11.

PAS is also sitting out the Cameron Highlands by-election, scheduled for Jan 26.

Last year, it gave way to BN in the Sungai Kandis by-election as well.
