Sarawak group says road maintenance is Putrajaya’s responsibility

A movement campaigning for greater autonomy for Sarawak has criticised Putrajaya for not allocating funds to maintain roads in the state.

Sarawak4Sarawakians (S4S) questioned the federal government for asking the state to bear the costs of grass cutting and road infrastructure development.

S4S spokesman Lucas Chin said the federal authorities should handle whatever that was on the federal list and not the other way around.

Chin said this would be the best time for the state government to draft the Referendum Ordinance, which would enable the people to make their own call over major issues.

“The Referendum Ordinance needs to be drafted as Sarawakians have expressed their concerns over the federal government’s stand that its election manifesto is not a ‘bible’,” he said in a statement, referring to remarks made by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in July last year.

Chin said the ordinance was important as it would allow Sarawakians to decide the direction of the state.

“Let Sarawakians decide on what benefits them instead of waiting for the federal government as they are only known to politicise sensitive issues,” he added,
