GEORGE TOWN:
Police arrested a man in Butterworth for striking his wife with a clothes iron after she failed to mix him a drink on the eve of the new year.

North Seberang Perai police chief Noor Zainy Mohd Noor said the 43-year-old blacksmith attacked his 26-year-old wife at their house in Taman Kerapu, Butterworth.

Police received a distress call from the wife at 3pm claiming her husband had beaten her.

Zainy said investigations revealed the mother of two children, aged 3 and 5, was often abused by her husband of five years.

“In the latest incident, the wife claimed she was attacked by her husband for being late in mixing him a drink. The housewife said she was busy with household chores then,” Zainy said.

The woman was brought to a doctor for a check-up and doctors treated a wound on her head.

Zainy said the husband was found positive for morphine and had six previous convictions for drug abuse. A Magistrate’s Court later allowed police to remand him for four days for investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, which carries a maximum 10-year jail term or fine, or both, if convicted.
