PETALING JAYA:
Singapore’s foreign affairs ministry today clarified that the joint ministerial committee (JMC) was not mandated to discuss issues related to the Johor Bahru port limits.

The ministry was responding to comments by Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian who said he would raise the maritime border dispute between Malaysia and Singapore at the JMC in Iskandar Malaysia.

Singapore foreign affairs ministry, in a statement, said the JMC “is a regular, institutionalised bilateral platform for both sides to review the progress of economic cooperation”.

It also said Singapore had not received any official proposal or communications from Malaysia related to the construction of any new road link between Singapore and Malaysia.

Of late, tensions between the two neighbours have heightened over claims of territorial intrusions.

Putrajaya has complained of airspace intrusions while Singapore has complained of sea intrusions.

Earlier this month, Singapore also filed a declaration, under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to ensure Malaysia didn’t start unilateral third-party arbitration or adjudication on the maritime boundary dispute.
