
“This would benefit the people of both countries,” he said in a Facebook post, his first public comment on the matter.
“Malaysia is our closest neighbour,” he added. “We have close people-to-people ties. Singapore seeks cooperation with Malaysia.”
He also urged Malaysia to cease the alleged intrusions of government vessels into Singapore waters, saying this was a violation of the republic’s sovereignty as well as international law.
“This is a serious matter of national interest. We will not hesitate to take firm action to protect Singapore’s sovereignty and territory.”
On Dec 7, the Singapore foreign ministry said the country did not agree with Malaysia’s proposal for both nations to cease sending assets to the disputed area.
However, it said Singapore “remains ready to discuss this issue with Malaysia in a constructive manner, in the spirit of preserving our important bilateral relationship”.
In a response the following day, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the differences between Malaysia and Singapore over maritime boundaries would be addressed based on legal provisions and rights.
“Lots of people announce their borders off and on, and that causes disputes, so we will settle this (based) on legal provisions and our rights,” he told reporters.
