He said this was because all transactions made through cashless means would be recorded by banking and other systems.
“If we go cashless, then it will be hard for people to offer bribes as everything will be recorded.
“This way we can trace those who are offering and accepting bribes. This is one of the government’s efforts in reducing the high cost of living,” he said.
In his speech in launching the My100 and My50 unlimited travel pass using MyKad in KL Sentral here, Mahathir said the travel pass was among the many initiatives by the government to head towards a cashless society.
Mahathir pointed out that Pakatan Harapan in its election manifesto had promised to do its best to reduce the cost of living for the people.
He said reducing bribery would reduce the cost of living.
Explaining, he said in a situation where corruption was rampant, any work would involve more cost as people would have to pay a sum of money to certain parties in power to ensure that their requests were approved.
“The Pakatan Harapan government is doing our best to help the people although we never asked to be thanked. But when there’s an election, do think about it. We would want to be rewarded too so that we can help the people some more,” he quipped.
The My100 and My50 unlimited travel pass using MyKad can be obtained from today and can be used starting Jan 1 next year.
