KUALA LUMPUR:
The Election Commission (EC) today assured that efforts are underway to determine if the 150-year-old voter reported earlier this year, as well as another 73,000 voters above the age of 90, are still alive.

EC chairman Azhar Harun said although logic dictated that the 150-year-old was no longer living, the EC still needed to follow procedure to determine the voter’s details.

“We will look into it and clean it up,” he told reporters after the morning session of a roundtable on electoral reform with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof and another 140 participants.

DAP Youth publicity secretary Abdul Aziz Isa said he had come across the voter, Mohd Said bin Mohd Arshad Mohd Said, when making a checklist from the EC’s official website earlier this year.

Of the 73,000 voters above the age of 90, Azhar said 11,000 had voted in the May 9 polls.

“We will check the list and clear it,” he said, adding that the EC was also looking into several common addresses used by over 100 voters.

“We have identified some of the addresses,” he said. “Some have a common address of a mosque while others do not live at the registered address.

“We are taking action against some and calling others to identify them.”

Azhar said the EC was continuously updating the list of voters and looking at ways to work with the police and National Registration Department to automatically register the death of any voter.

This would help the EC update its list, he added.

On the Rantau by-election, Azhar said they would wait for the Federal Court’s decision on the appeal by incumbent Mohamad Hassan.

“They have six months to decide, but they may announce it earlier,” he told reporters when asked on the date for the by-election.
