GEORGE TOWN:
The road shoulder for a main road not far away from the recent Bukit Kukus lanslide site has caved in following a downpour this afternoon, with the authorities mulling a complete or partial road closure.

The incident occurred on Jalan Paya Terubong, close to the Jalan Tun Sardon interchange.

The single carriageway road connects Air Itam and Relau.

No one was hurt in the incident.

When contacted, state Public Works Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said repairs were being carried out at the affected portion just before it collapsed.

“It’s a site where ongoing works are being done to repair the slope. The TNB 33KV cables needed to be diverted elsewhere by Tenaga Nasional (TNB).

“But now, after the slope failure yesterday, TNB needs to rethink its way of diverting them.

“The slope unit from Public Works Department’s (PWD) headquarters will be coming to assess and propose a new design,” Zairil said.

Meanwhile, state Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said police and the PWD were considering closing the road to ensure safety of motorists.

“It is an old site that was under repair for erosion. Police and PWD are studying the situation.

“Traffic may need to be diverted due to safety concerns. We will keep all posted,” he said.
