He said there was no “proper guidelines” in the past which led to the dual-language road signs in Shah Alam.
Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah recently ordered the removal of road signs in Shah Alam which were in both the Malay and Chinese languages. The Sultan said they should only be in the national language.
Amirudin said the current state government had not discussed any proposal for dual-language road signs, adding the decision to have it in both languages was made in 2017.
Yesterday, in a letter issued to the Selangor government by the Selangor Ruler’s private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani, the palace said the removal of the road signs should be completed before the Sultan’s 73rd birthday on Dec 1.
Meanwhile, a Shah Alam City Council spokesman told FMT today that it had already removed the dual-language road signs.
Amirudin said he accepted the Sultan’s decree to replace road signs in dual languages with those using only the national language.
“We are committed to uphold the national language. There’s no use blaming anyone in this issue as it is already in the past.”
