KUALA LUMPUR:
The government has to take aggressive action to secure compensation from Goldman Sachs over the 1MDB scandal that has tarnished the country’s reputation, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim said the United States has initiated prosecution but Malaysia should also take action to demand the return of the US$600 million commission the American multinational investment bank and financial services company received for its work with the state investment arm.

“We must claim not only the commission. Malaysia must also claim compensation for our damaged reputation. I believe the government should take this measure to secure a quantum far bigger than the commission given to Goldman Sachs,” he said when speaking during the debate on the Supply Bill 2019 at the policy stage in the House.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng reportedly said in an interview with business station BFM89.9 on Monday that Malaysia will recover all the 1MDB-related fees and payments from Goldman Sachs.
