Ambiga’s remarks over Julau membership unfair, says Fahmi Fadzil

The PKR communications director says besides Julau, Lembah Pantai also has an increase in membership.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil says PKR membership has increased in many divisions since Pakatan Harapan won GE14.
KUALA LUMPUR:
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil says it is not fair for former Bersih 2.0 chairman Ambiga Sreenevasan to make “inappropriate” conclusions against the party following controversy over the increase in membership in the Julau division, in Sarawak.

Fahmi, who is the MP for Lembah Pantai, said there had also been an increase in the membership at several other divisions after Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the 14th general election (GE14) in May.

“The increase in membership is not just in Julau but also other divisions including in Lembah Pantai.

“I feel that it may not be fair to judge based on just one perception,” he said in the Parliament lobby today.

Ambiga recently posted on Twitter saying that PKR would soon lose the right to be called “reformists” after failing to conduct clean and fair party elections.

She said the party needed to have an election method that could be trusted, especially since it was responsible in starting the Bersih movement.

“PKR will soon lose the moral high ground to call themselves reformists. At the very least they need to believe in clean and fair elections to be reformists. They did. Some years ago. When they helped start the Bersih movement,” she said on Twitter.

Ambiga was referring to claims that 13,000 voters were included in PKR Julau’s records in June as the deadline for new members who would be able to vote approached.

Meanwhile, PKR candidate for vice-president Iskandar Mohd Akin said he respected Ambiga’s remarks and her criticism should be taken into account to improve the flaws in the recent PKR polls.

“That’s her opinion. Of course as a public figure close to Bersih, we respect her views.

“I don’t think that will weaken our spirits in our struggle for reform,” he said.
