PETALING JAYA:
PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya launched a scathing attack today on the party’s political bureau over the approval of a more than-13,000 spike in membership in the Julau division, accusing it of behaving like the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) administration in bulldozing through the endorsement.

The lawyer said members of the bureau had raised serious concerns over the jump in membership from 66 to 13,178, but that these were ignored.

“If the increase in membership is legitimate as claimed by the PKR political bureau, why have so many people come forward with complaints that their names have been added to the Julau membership roll without their consent?”

In a statement, she said the list of new members included individuals such as Rolland Duat of Gabungan Parti Sarawak and members of Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak, all of whom had denied joining PKR.

“A phone survey revealed at least 1,310 victims whose names were registered without consent, whereas other names were not even contactable,” she added.

She also accused the bureau of ignoring the evidence of systematic fraud presented by Sarawak PKR information chief Vernon Kedit in a statutory declaration on Oct 17.

“It is fundamental that in the face of such serious complaints, PKR must carry out a thorough investigation,” she said.

“Irrespective of whether or not the objections were made to the list during the objections period, PKR cannot use this as an excuse to do nothing in the face of mounting evidence of fraud.

“It is thus outrageous for the party’s secretary-general to keep repeating that there were no objections made, and that therefore the list is legitimate. Failure to object, even if true, cannot legitimise a fraudulent list.”

Adding that the bureau was acting as though such complaints did not exist, she said this was a form of “denial syndrome” that “smacked of the usual behaviour of Umno/BN”.

“In short, the political bureau’s approval of the Julau membership spike is tantamount to the legitimisation of fraud.”

Calling the bureau’s approval of the membership list “indefensible and unacceptable”, she said the matter was now a question of public interest as PKR was part of the ruling government.

“The way PKR’s election has been conducted is even worse than the way the BN-era Election Commission used to conduct elections,” she said, calling for voting in the division to be suspended ahead of its scheduled date tomorrow.
