
The Bersih election committee announced in a statement today that Fann and the others in the new Bersih committee for 2018-2020 were elected unopposed when nominations closed on Oct 22.
Bersih election committee members Stanley Yong and Sevan Doraisamy said: “With all candidates winning unopposed, the election day, which was set originally for Nov 10 is no longer necessary and is duly cancelled.”
Abim secretary-general Muhamad Faisal Abdul Aziz, a lawyer and writer, is the new deputy president with the vice-chairperson of the Civil Rights Committee of the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Ngeow Chow Ying, a lawyer, as treasurer.
Beverly Joeman, the secretariat director of Jaringan Orang Asal SeMalaysia and Ann Teo, one of the founders of voter empowerment group Rise of Sarawak Efforts, or Rose, were elected vice-presidents representing Sabah and Sarawak respectively.
Ng Geok Chee and Alex Johnson were elected members of the committee.
Ng is chairperson of the women’s division of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) while Johnson is a business relationships manager with an IT software solutions firm who has been active in Bersih.
Fann was also part of the Bersih 2.0 steering committee from 2013-2016, where he served first as the southern region vice-chairman and later as treasurer.
He led the Delineation Action & Research Team (DART) of Bersih to prepare the public to challenge the Election Commissions’s redelineation of electoral boundaries.
