Najib, Irwan at court to face CBT charges

Former intelligence head Hasanah Ab Hamid, who faces separate charges of CBT, arrives shortly after.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Former prime minister Najib Razak and former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah have arrived at the Sessions Court here to face charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT) linked to government funds.

Irwan, who is expected to be jointly charged with Najib, arrived at 8.15am escorted by officers from the police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Najib arrived shortly after at 8.23am.

They were met by members of the media who had gathered at the court compound since 7am.

Irwan was arrested yesterday afternoon at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya where he had gone for questioning by anti-graft officials as part of investigations into the 1MDB-International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC) deal.

Najib, who was also called in for questioning, left after giving his statement.

It is believed that Najib and Irwan will face at least six charges of CBT involving over RM6 billion.

The charges are said to be linked to the 1MDB scandal, the East Coast Rail Link and two gas pipeline projects in the peninsula and Sabah.

A source had told FMT that the duo may also face charges of using approved government allocations to settle 1MDB’s dispute with IPIC.

Former intelligence head Hasanah Ab Hamid, who is facing separate charges of CBT, arrived at the court complex after Najib at about 8.30am.
